Letter to Jarom: Month 4

Dear Jarom,

On New Year's Eve you turned 4 months old. This month you've started fighting sleep. We can tell you're getting sleepy because you start rubbing your eyes and get kind of fussy so we wrap you up and start rocking you. You've started making this kind of constant whiny sound when we're trying to get you to sleep and I'm assuming it's to try to keep yourself awake. It works for a few minutes but then we can generally get you to sleep. Until this past week, anyways.

Right after Christmas we moved out of your first home. We're in a transitional phase so we're staying with your Aunt Rachel and Uncle Jonnie for a week - part of the reason I haven't gotten a chance to write this month's letter until now. I don't know if it's because you're in an unfamiliar place but it has been SO HARD trying to get you to sleep this week. You cry and make that whiny noise and balk at being held in the "sleeping position" and have not been going to bed before 10pm this whole week! But soon we'll be in a new home and you'll have your own room and hopefully we'll get you settled into a routine shortly after and you'll go to sleep at a decent hour.

We think you may have started teething too, which could be part of your irritability. You like it when we rub your gums and you chew and drool on just about everything. And you LOVE your binky. The other night we went to Travis and Jenni's and forgot your binky and you were inconsolable for about 2 hours! We won't make that mistake again!

You're not always cranky though. You've been smiling and giggling more this month. You absolutely love your cousins, especially Lindzie and Spencer and giggle at just about anything they do, although you save your biggest smiles for daddy and me. You've started recognizing people who are familiar and get a little shy around people who aren't so familiar. You met your great-grandma Jean for the first time this month and you didn't take to her right away - probably because you'd never seen her before. But you've since warmed up to her. You met your great-uncle Jeff too and you really liked when he'd dance around the living room with you. You really like to dance. I dance with you when you're being cranky and it makes you smile.

You also get giggly right before bed. That's probably our favorite time with you. I think you know when it's time to go to bed and you try to charm us to let you stay up later. You giggle at anything - especially your dad - and coo and it's so much fun. You stare at your hands like they are the greatest invention ever and still enjoy sticking your fists in your mouth, even if your binky is already in there. You are very strong and like to "walk" while holding onto somebody's hands. If you had better balance you'd probably be walking for real.

You celebrated your first Christmas and New Year's Eve but they were just days to you. You weren't all that interested in opening your presents although you made out like a bandit. It's a good thing you're too young to know you're spoiled! You did like looking at the Christmas tree - especially the lights - and everyone thought you were adorable in your Santa suit. Your favorite presents seemed to be the stuffed Pooh and Tigger dolls Scott and Brittany got you. You smiled and grabbed at them and immediately stuck them in your mouth. It was really fun having you around for the holidays.

Love, Mommy
