Letter to Jarom: 3 Months

Dear Jarom,

You are three months old. This month you had your first cold. You got really congested and we felt so bad for you, although, besides being a little more irritable in the evenings than usual you really didn’t act like you felt sick at all. Much to our relief. You were just as happy and smiley as usual.

You’re becoming more and more fun every day. You have discovered your hands and sometimes in the early morning we’ll hear you sucking away at them. This is nice because we know we don’t have to get up and get you quite yet because you are content trying to fit both fists in your mouth at the same time. It will be quite a trick if you can master it! You’ve figured out how to suck your thumb all by yourself. One day we found you and you had your thumb in your mouth and your index finger up your nose. It was too funny!

You are talking in your little baby language a lot and it’s so much fun to watch. Sometimes you talk to your toys, but much of the time you talk to your dad and I. You get so animated when you speak and I wonder what wonderful things you would tell us if we could understand you. You really like it when dad talks back to you in his Donald Duck voice and you just smile and coo right back at him.

We’ve noticed that you can also anticipate certain sequences of events. You get very excited when we put your bib on or you hear your bottle shaking because you know it’s time to eat. You also get very upset if we don’t get that bottle in your mouth within a split second of you recognizing it’s time to eat. I know, I know, you haven’t eaten in 3-4 hours and are wasting away to nothing. You also get excited when we take your clothes off at night because that means it’s time for a bath! You’ve just started splashing around in your little baby tub and seem to have a wonderful time. You don’t hate your carseat anymore and actually get very excited when we put you in because you know you get to go outside and look around at this crazy new world.

Grandma Funk told us a wonderful story about you this month. One day she was watching you and you started to cry. She picked you up but nothing she did would stop your crying. She walked over to a picture of Christ and you stopped crying and just kept staring at Him. She said as long as you were looking at that picture you weren’t crying and even started to smile at it. She said she felt like you really recognized Him. It brought tears to my eyes as she relayed those events. What a choice spirit you are. We see it in you every day and it makes us so happy.

You celebrated your first Thanksgiving and your daddy’s birthday this month. I think you would have rather been eating turkey than the bottles we fed you. Soon enough you’ll be eating everything in sight. I just know it. You have become very smiley this month and a few days after Thanksgiving you laughed your first real laugh. Daddy was carrying you around on a pillow and talking to you in his funny voices and you just let out a giggle! I think daddy’s pretty funny too. We made you a smiley face cake to celebrate. Grandma Watts says that when a baby laughs for the first time you should throw them a party so they grow up to be a generous person. This is a Navajo tradition. So we ate your smiley face cake with your cousins Lindzie and Bailey. I can’t wait for you to be old enough to eat cake and get it all over your hands and face and probably in your hair too. You’re already growing up so fast, that day will be here in no time.

Love, Mommy
